Sunbonnet Sue Broom Doll Pattern

She is more gorgeous in person!! This is really quick and easy to make. Great beginner project. She's carrying a drawstring purse. Would make a perfect gift!

 

FINISHED SIZE:Approximately 12" tall.

Materials: Sport Weight Yarn

Yellow (MC) – 200 yds (180 meters)

White (CC) – 60 yds (54 meters)

Pine Broom 12" flat dried with 3-1/2" handle; Curly Hair small amount; Polyester Fiberfill; Small Pink Roses – 5; White Ribbon - 1/8" wide x 20" long and ¼" wide x 2yds long, Hot or Craft Glue, Yarn Needle.

CrochetHook: Size E or size needed to obtain gauge.

GAUGE: 5 dc and 3 rows = 1"

 

Abbreviations

beg -  beginning

BLO - Back Loop Only

ch - chain

dc - double crochet

lp - loop

rnd - round

sc - single crochet

sl st - slip stitch

sp - space

st - stitch

yo - yarn over

 

DRESS

Rnd 1(right side): Leaving 9" end for gathering, starting at top, with MC, ch 24, being careful not to twist chains sl st in first ch to form ring, ch 3 (counts as dc now and throughout), dc in each ch around, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg of ch-3 (join all dc rnds in this manner). (24 dc)

Rnd 2-13: Ch 3, increasing 4 dc evenly spaced dc in each st around.

At the end of Rnd 13 there will be 72 dc.

Rnd 14: Working in BLO, ch 3, increasing 4 dc evenly spaced dc in each st around. (76 dc)

Rnds 15-18:Working in both lps, ch 3, increasing 4 dc evenly spaced dc in each st around.

At the end of Rnd 18 there will be 92 dc. Finish off.

 

Dress Edging

Rnd 1:Working in unused lps of Rnd 13, with Rnd 1 of Dress facing you join CC in any lp, ch 5 (counts as dc, ch 2), dc in same lp, ch 1, skip next 2 lps, * (dc, ch 2, dc) in next lp, ch 1, skip next 2 lps; rep from * around; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-5. (24 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 2:Sl st in ch-2 sp, ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), (dc, ch 1, dc) in same sp, sl st in next ch-1 sp, * shell in next ch-2 sp, sl st in next ch-1 sp; rep from * around; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-4. (24 shells)

Rnd 3: * Sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 4, sl st in next ch-1 sp,ch 3, sl st in next sl st, ch 3, sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 4, sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, sl st in next sl st, ch 3; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sl st. Finish off and weave in ends.

 

Sleeve(Make 1)

Rnd 1 (right side): With MC, ch 4, sl st in first ch to form ring, ch 3, 11 dc in ring; join. (12 dc)

Rnd 2:Ch 3, dc in same st as joining, 2 dc in each st around; join. (24 dc)

Rnds 3-6:Ch 3, dc in each st around; join. (24 dc)

Rnd 7:Ch 1, sc dec 12 times, join with sl st in first sc. (12 sc)

Rnd 8:Ch 1, sc in each st around. (12 sc)

Rnd 9:Rep Rnd 2.

Rnd 10:Ch 3, dc in each st around; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. Finish off.

Rnd 11:Right Side Facing join CC in any st, ch 1, sc in same st, ch 3, skip next st, (sc in next st, ch 3, skip next st) around; join with sl st in first sc. Finish off.

 

Bonnet

Rnd 1 (right side): With MC, ch 4, sl st in first ch to from ring, ch 3, 11 dc in ring; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. (12 dc)

Rnd 2:(Ch 3, dc) in first st, 2 dc in each st around; join. (24 dc)

Rnd 3:(Ch 3, dc) in first st, dc in next st, (2 dc in next st, dc in next st) around; join. (36 dc)

Rnd 4:(Ch 3, dc) in first st, dc in next 2 sts, (2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts) around; join. (48 dc)

Rnd 5:(Ch 3, dc) in first st, dc in next 3 sts, (2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts) around; join. (60 dc)

Rnd 6:(Ch 3, dc) in first st, dc in next 4 sts, (2 dc in next st, dc in next 4 sts) around; join. (72 dc)

Rnd 7:(Ch 3, dc) in first st, dc in next 5 sts, (2 dc in next st, dc in next 5 sts) around; join. (84 dc)

Rnds 8-9: Ch 3, dc in each st around; join. (84 dc)

Rnd 10:Ch 1, sc dec 42 times; join. (42 sc)

Rnd 11:Working in BLO, ch 1, sc in each st around; join. (42 sc)

Rnd 12:Working in both lps, (ch 3, dc) in first st, 2 dc in each st around; join. (84 dc)

Rnds 13-15: Working in both lps, ch 3, dc in each st around; join. (84 dc)

 

Bonnet Edging

Rnd 1:Working in unused lps of Rnd 10, top of Bonnet facing you join CC in any lp, ch 5 (counts as dc, ch 2), dc in same lp, ch 1, skip next 2 lps, * (dc, ch 2, dc) in next lp, ch 1, skip next 2 lps; rep from * around; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-5. (14 ch-2 sps)

Rnds 2-3:Rep Rnds 2-3 of Dress Edging.

 

Drawstring Purse

Rnd 1: With CC, ch 4, sl st in first ch to form ring, ch 3 (counts as dc), 13 dc in ring; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. (14 dc)

Rnd 2:Working in BLO, dc in each st around; join.

Rnds 3-4:Ch 3, dc in each st around; join.

Rnd 5:Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, ch 3, (sc in next st, ch 3) 13 times; join with sl st in first sc. (14 ch-3 sps)

Rnd 6:Sl st in next ch-3 sp, sc in same sp, ch 3, (sc in next sp, ch 3) around; join with sl st in first sc. Finish off and weave in ends.

Tie with CC, ch 50 and finish off. Weave through Purse Rnd 4. Gather and Tie bow with ends.

 

Finishing

Insert broom handle up through top opening of Dress. Weave 9" end through unused lps of starting ch, gather to fit around handle. Secure. Smooth and flatten Dress to shape of broom.

Stuff Rnds 1-6 of Sleeve. Sew at an angle slanting left over Rnds 3-8 of Dress. Stuff purse with small amount of stuffing. Sew Purse to inside lower edge of Sleeve opening.

Glue a small amount of Fiberfill to top right of broom handle to shape head. Glue Curly Hair about 1-1/2" down from top of handle with short curls at the top and the longer curls cascading down back of Dress above Sleeve. Place Bonnet at a right angle on top of handle. Make five 2" bows from ¼" ribbon. Glue Roses to center of Bows. Glue Bows to Dress, Sleeve and Bonnet.

For Hanger, thread 1/8" Ribbon around three stitches on Rnd 1 of Dress at back of broom and out top of Bonnet. Tie ends in knot.
