Halloween Tombstone & Fence

Easy Skill
Size:Tombstone - About 1½" high, 3¾" wide.
Picket Fence - About 5¼" wide, 3" high
Materials:Crochet Cotton Thread Size 10 - White (55 yds), small amounts of Black; Large Needle; White Glue, Cardboard, Plastic Wrap and Fabric Stiffener, Graph Paper.
Crochet Hook:Steel crochet hook # 7
Gauge:
For Tombstone - 8 sc and 8 rows = 1 inch.
For Fence - 7 hdc = 1 inch
Abbreviations
JOINING WITH SC
When instructed to join with sc, begin with sl knot on hook, insert hook in st or sp indicated, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw through both loops on hook.
Stiffening Directions
Cut a piece of cardboard larger than the article to be stiffened. Place Graph Paper over cardboard. Cover the cardboard with clear plastic wrap.
Soak piece in fabric stiffener, squeeze out excess.
Position piece on plastic and pin in place.
Allow to dry overnight.
TOMBSTONE
Stand
Row 1:With White, ch 13, sc in 2nd ch from hook, (sc in next ch) across. (12 sc)
Rows 2-7:Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across. (12 sc)
At the end of Row 7, DO NOT FINISH OFF.
Edging
Rnd 1:Ch 1, do not turn, sc around outside of piece working (sc, ch 1, sc) in each corner; join with sl st to first sc. Finish off and weave in ends.
Head of Tombstone
Row 1:With White, ch 13, sc in 2nd ch from hook, (sc in next ch) across. (12 sc)
Rows 2-15:Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.
Rows 16-19:Ch 1, turn, decreasing 1 st at beg and end of row, sc in ea sc across.
At end of Row 19, DO NOT FINISH OFF.
Edging
Rnd 1:Ch 1, do not turn, sc around outside edge of piece. Finish off and weave in ends.
Finishing
Using Black and with straight sts, embroider "R.I.P." on Head of Tombstone.
Stiffen pieces as directed. Pin them flat and straight.
When dry, glue Head to center row of Stand, supporting Tombstone in upright position until dry.
PICKET FENCE
Horizontal Rails (Make 2)
Row 1:With White, ch 40, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, (hdc in next ch) across. Finish off and weave in ends.
Vertical Posts (Make 4)
Row 1:Leaving a 6" end, with White, ch 20, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, (hdc in next ch) across to last ch, (3 dc, htr, tr, htr, 3 dc) in last ch; working around other side of starting ch; (hdc in next ch) across. Finish off leaving long end.
Feet(Make 2)
Rnd 1:With White, ch 1 (center ch), ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in center ch, ch 1, (3 dc in center ch, ch 1) 3 times; join with sl st to first dc. Finish off and weave in ends.
Finishing
Lay Fence parts out and pin straight and flat. Make sure each Vertical Posts is the same length.
When dry, place Rails over Posts evenly spaced and attach with a drop of glue. Allow glue to dry. Attach Feet to the 2 end posts with Glue. Support the posts while glue dries completely.
